The Early History

There were the two names which this hill is called before it was given the name Fort Canning, It was known as Bukit Larangan  (which mean Forbidden Hill in malay) before Raffles arrived in Singapore. After He arrived he built a house on the hill which housed the governors of Singapore. Because of this, it was known as Government Hill.
